Joining us

You don't need to know a Freemason to become one.

Most of our recent members arrived by sending an email to a stranger. If you are over twenty-one, believe in a supreme being of some kind, and are of good character, you can ask to join us.

How it works

1
Get in touch

A short message is enough. Our Membership Officer replies personally, usually within a couple of days, and will answer anything you want to ask before you commit to anything at all.

2
Come to a curry night

No ceremony, no regalia, no obligation — just a meal with eight or nine of us. Bring your wife or partner if it helps. Many people come two or three times before deciding.

3
Meet the Committee

An informal conversation, usually at home or at the hall, so both sides can be sure it suits. You complete a short form and the members vote at the next regular meeting.

4
Your Initiation

A ceremony written three centuries ago, performed for you by people who will by then be familiar faces. A member is appointed to guide you through your first year.

From first email to Initiation is typically three to six months, depending on our meeting calendar.

The questions people actually ask

What does it cost?

There is an annual subscription and a charge for dining on meeting nights, plus a one-off cost at the start for your regalia. We will tell you the exact figures before you apply — nobody should join and then find out. If money is ever a difficulty, say so privately; it is dealt with quietly and it does not end your membership.

How much time does it take?

Eight meetings a year, on a Thursday evening, plus the curry nights if you want them. Work, family and health come first — that is not a polite phrase, it is a rule. Members step back for a season and return without any fuss.

Is it a religion, or do I need one?

Freemasonry is not a religion and does not replace one. It asks only that you believe in a supreme being; which faith that is, and whether you practise it, is your own affair. Religion and politics are not discussed in the Lodge.

Is it secret?

Our members, our address and our meeting dates are all on this website. What is private is the ceremonial — the modes of recognition and the drama of the degrees — which we keep for the same reason you would not read the last page of a novel to someone starting it.

Will it help my career?

No, and using membership for business advantage is expressly forbidden. If that is the reason you are asking, this is the wrong door.

Can women join?

Not this Lodge — Cae Glas is a men's Lodge under the United Grand Lodge of England. There are two women's Grand Lodges in England with Shropshire lodges, and we are glad to put you in touch with them.

Still just curious?

Come to a curry night and ask us anything. It costs you the price of a curry and commits you to nothing whatsoever.
